Winter 02

This is ... unexpected

But yes, this is Arizona in mid-March. O_o

That is our back deck and yard. And it's still snowing.

Mom says it's not unheard of to get snow on Easter where we are. Yeesh. I'M KINDA READY FOR THIS TO BE OVER FOR THE YEAR, WEATHER.

Since I last posted any news of any detail, my mother and I have moved house. The new place is a major improvement in many ways, big enough for both of us and our puppeh, but small enough to take care of easily. There have been loads of headaches along the way, but things are starting to settle down and even out a bit.

How are all of you doing?

A little post-holiday reccing!

I'll post a more detailed update in a bit, plus my reactions to Livejournal's recent changes and more Yuletide recs, but for now I must share two kinds of joy:

The Affair on Strigoi Street, aka my Yuletide gift-fic. From Bujold's Vorkosigan series, centered on Ivan Vorpatril and a laugh-out-loud delight!

and

the END OF THE YEAR meme

Squeeeeee!!!

Dear Yuletide Author, <3

Yes my lovelies, Yuletide signups are live until Sunday, November 20th at around 8pm EST. Jump in and give some small fandoms and fellow fanfic writers a little seasonal joy! The mods have set up some YouTube screencasts to guide both newbies and old hands through the changes in signing up; the link is near the top of the form. If you'd like to participate but don't yet have an AO3 account, email the mods at yuletide@yuletidetreasure.org. And feel free to hit me up with questions!

And there you are! Hopefully I've given you a direction, or at least a hint or two. Bear in mind that the story concepts I've suggested are not the only stories I'd enjoy; they're just possible ideas. I'd be happy to supply more details to the mods, if you feel the need to pass on any questions through them. But as I said up above, write from the heart. If a story matters to you, it will matter to your readers.

And if at all possible ... HAVE FUN!
Yuletide

It's time once again for the Yuletide Small Fandom Exchange!

Yuletide fandom nominations are open!

Because I am a late goober, I should also mention that they close at around 9:30pm EST tonight.  HOWEVER you can still sign up for the Yuletide exchange, whether or not you participate in the fandom nomination stage.  The signup form will go up as soon as possible after fandom noms close; keep an eye on yuletide and yuletide_admin for details.  On Dreamwidth you can get RSS feeds for both comms.

Ask me any questions you might have!  Yuletide is one of my favorite fannish things, so I'm always willing to help someone new to it.  ^_^

wrisomifu 02, MIFU FTW

It's that time once again, fellow mifus!

wrisomifu is once again taking signups for their annual moanfest. If you're ready to write 10 minutes per day and creeb about every second of it (or come up with elaborate excuses for why you didn't get your ten minutes in)**, then check out the comm and sign up!

**People who consistently and cheerfully put in their 10 minutes are also welcome, but be prepared to be called an overachiever. ;)

Roslin--Are You Kidding Me?

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

On November 8th, the voters of Mississippi will be considering a "Personhood Amendment" (Amendment #26) which would give a fertilized egg more rights than a live born woman, and would outlaw abortion and birth control.

“Be it Enacted by the People of the State of Mississippi: SECTION 1. Article III of the constitution of the state of Mississippi is hereby amended BY THE ADDITION OF A NEW SECTION TO READ: Section 33. Person defined. As used in this Article III of the state constitution, "The term 'person' or 'persons' shall include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof." This initiative shall not require any additional revenue for implementation.”

Please spread the word. Right now Mississippi is the only state with such an amendment on the ballot, but others are in the works for other states.

I really wish this surprised me.

(Reposting from cakmpls)

sartorias and rachelmanija have an essay in Publishers Weekly that they would like you to read:
http://blogs.publishersweekly.com/blogs/genreville/?p=1519

"An agent from a major agency, one which represents a bestselling YA novel in the same genre as ours, called us.

"The agent offered to sign us on the condition that we make the gay character straight, or else remove his viewpoint and all references to his sexual orientation."

If you read all the way through, you will find suggestions for what you can do.

Eeeeeeee!!!

Return of the memeskillet

From the most custardy of pringles:

Go look at your blog/journal. Find the last fandom-related thing you posted. The characters in that post are now your team-mates in the Zombie Apocalypse. How fucked are you?

Hmm. The most recent more-or-less fannish thing I did was the five books meme. Would teaming up with ancient China's foremost scholar (and greatest con artist), a thousand quaddies, a fifteen-century-old púca, an Ivoran sorcerer and the world's best hit man during the Zombie Apocalypse be considered cheating?
